Public service carries the responsibility of governing effectively within constitutional and legal boundaries. Congressional Republicans have failed to uphold this responsibility since their electoral victory in 2024. The upcoming midterms present voters with an opportunity to hold them accountable.
Challenges to Constitutional Checks and Balances
Our government operates with checks and balances designed to prevent tyranny. However, congressional Republicans have neglected this vital role. They have acted as supporters of former President Trump, shielding him from oversight. An example is the unanimous Republican Senate Judiciary Committee vote to advance Todd Blanche, Trump’s former criminal defense lawyer, as U.S. attorney general. Despite accusations of corruption involving a slush fund to reward Trump’s allies and provide legal immunity, Republicans supported Blanche. His actions included obstructing justice in the Epstein files and undermining the credibility of the Justice Department through misconduct related to ICE.
The “One Big Beautiful Bill” and Its Impact
One of the 119th Congress’s significant legislations, the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” extended tax cuts to the wealthiest while cutting food aid for over 4.5 million people, including 1.5 million children. Republicans ignored this impact, prioritizing benefits for the wealthy class aligned with Trump. Trump bragged about a Republican tax provision enabling a friend to unnecessarily purchase a private plane. The removal of a tax credit making health insurance affordable caused millions to lose coverage, risking their families’ health.
Worsened Economic Conditions for Many
Republican fiscal policies and Trump’s tariffs threaten the financial wellbeing of 70% of the lowest-income American households, redirecting resources to the wealthiest 1%. This reverse Robin Hood approach is a key reason for Trump’s unpopularity and growing support for progressive candidates calling for a government serving all citizens.
The Imperative of Voter Mobilization
The Trump administration’s fear of accountability incites efforts to hinder voter participation in the upcoming elections. Trump’s actions, supported by a sympathetic Supreme Court majority, show potential extremes he might pursue to evade accountability. Consequently, voters must mobilize and combat electoral interference, ensuring their rights for a better future.
