Comedian Patton Oswalt expressed his disapproval of “Real Time” host Bill Maher’s recent attempts to “placate” former President Donald Trump, suggesting such efforts would inevitably make Maher a target for Trump.
In an interview with SiriusXM host Dean Obeidallah, Oswalt contrasted Maher’s approach to that of other comedians like Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert, who are known for their anti-Trump stances. “Colbert and Kimmel… Trump hates them, but he hates them because they don’t love him. He wants them to love him, and then the minute they love him, he has zero respect for them because, deep down, he hates himself,” Oswalt stated.
Oswalt advised maintaining a consistent stance against Trump. “You just have to stick with your guns and just go, ‘Yeah, this guy sucks.’ In the long run, it will pay out,” he said, adding that even purely from a business standpoint, dealing with Trump usually leads to one’s downfall.

Oswalt’s comments are rooted in a February event where Trump criticized Maher on Truth Social. This occurred after Maher continued his occasional anti-Trump rhetoric despite having shared a dinner with Trump at the White House the previous year.
Trump’s criticisms included mocking Maher for jesting that China would cease Canadian hockey as economic relations grew between China and Canada.

Trump described his dinner with Maher as a “waste [of] time,” accusing Maher of being nervous during their meeting. Trump also lambasted Maher’s show and ratings.
Maher responded by defending his joke about China and Canada, saying, “He was very mad at me because I didn’t get his joke about how China is gonna make Canada give up hockey.” Maher commented, “I think we’re going to have to workshop that one for a while.” He added that while Trump referred to their dinner as a waste, he did not share this view.
