Community Spirit Shines at Morton Grove’s National Night Out

In a remarkable display of community unity, a large crowd of neighbors, supporters, first responders, and Village staff came together on Tuesday, August 4 at the Morton Grove Civic Center. The event celebrated Morton Grove’s National Night Out, marking its 11th year. Organized by the Morton Grove Police Department, this block party celebrated the National Night Out initiative. Introduced in the mid-1980s, the campaign promotes strong bonds between police officers and the communities they serve.

Event Highlights

Police Chief Mike Weitzel highlighted this annual event as a valuable chance for residents to meet local police officers and firefighters in a relaxed setting. This year’s festivities provided entertainment for all ages from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Activities included kids’ games, a touch-a-truck exhibit, a firefighter hose simulator, rock climbing, an inflatable obstacle course, pony rides, safety demonstrations, live music, and food offerings like hot dogs and tacos.

Local resident Kaila Leslie, who attended with her family, praised the event as an opportunity to enjoy family fun while supporting the community. Community Liaison Officers Justin Jurasz and Sean Lang played key roles in coordinating this year’s National Night Out. Jurasz emphasized the importance of building strong community ties through such gatherings.

Community Participation

The program featured information tables from various Village entities, including the Library, Park District, and Public Works. Community organizations like the Cub Scouts Pack #228 and other service providers participated as well. The event also featured educational opportunities such as insights from the Glenview Public Safety Dispatch Center about telecommunication roles and pet safety information from Animal Control Officer Kristin Smith, focusing on rabies vaccinations and microchipping.

Additionally, police officers demonstrated the use of drones for law enforcement activities, while the fire department offered a hands-on experience with a fire hose simulator. This allowed children to learn about firefighting techniques.

Community Leaders and Volunteers

Village officials, including Mayor Janine Witko, Trustees Connie Travis and Rita Minx, and Village Clerk Eileen Scanlon Harford, attended the event. Representatives from Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita’s office were present as well. Police Chief Mike Weitzel and Fire Chief Dennis Kennedy contributed to the event’s success.

Mayor Witko noted that National Night Out serves as a reflection of Morton Grove’s daily commitment to community building. She commended the Morton Grove Police Department for their work in fostering genuine connections with residents.

According to Chief Weitzel, the event’s success reflects the dedication of numerous volunteers, donors, and community partners. Officer Sean Lang expressed appreciation for the chance to interact with residents in a positive environment, highlighting the importance of seeing the community’s smiling faces beyond emergencies.
