Fauci’s Text Messages Reveal COVID-19 Vaccination Discussions

Newly released text messages from Dr. Anthony Fauci’s government-issued phone provide insight into private discussions among top U.S. health officials about COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy at a time of limited data availability. These messages, shared by Republican Senators Ron Johnson and Rand Paul, highlight conversations between Fauci, then-Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, and then-CDC Director Rochelle Walensky in January 2021. The first COVID-19 vaccines had just been introduced, leading to significant scrutiny over their implications for pregnant women.

Key Discussions and Concerns

In one notable message, Fauci expressed that there was “no data or theoretical reason” to prioritize vaccination at any specific stage of pregnancy but noted that immune responses from the vaccine, such as fever, “theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester.” Despite this concern, the officials openly discussed the absence of evidence indicating safety issues among vaccinated pregnant women and noted ongoing data collection efforts.

Republican Investigations and Public Communications

These disclosures emerge amidst growing Republican inquiries into Fauci’s pandemic management. The release follows earlier disclosure of Fauci’s COVID-era diaries and contentious Senate hearings. In these hearings, Fauci often invoked the Fifth Amendment. The text messages reveal how officials grappled with unanswered questions in early 2021. Pregnant women were mostly excluded from initial vaccine trials, and health agencies were still gathering real-world safety information about vaccine use in pregnancy.

Responses to Theoretical Risks

Dr. Murthy queried Fauci and Walensky regarding the existence of any evidence to guide COVID-19 vaccine administration timing during pregnancy. Walensky labeled the situation “data-free” but mentioned a CDC-backed pregnancy registry monitoring vaccinated women. Fauci confirmed no evidence favored any specific pregnancy stage. He addressed concerns about mRNA vaccines and reiterated that fever and cytokine reactions post-vaccination might “theoretically” link to first-trimester miscarriage risks. Nevertheless, they acknowledged lacking direct evidence of harm.

Further Dialogue and Updates

On the following day, the officials reviewed a World Health Organization announcement advising against Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for pregnant women due to limited data. Fauci countered this, stressing that COVID-19 could be a severe illness during pregnancy without noted safety issues in over 10,000 vaccinated pregnant women. He referenced supportive animal studies and indicated U.S. health authorities and key obstetrics organizations recommended vaccination, urging pregnant women to consult their doctors.

Public Health Guidance Adjustment

By mid-2021, the CDC and major obstetrics groups endorsed vaccination during pregnancy after gathering additional safety data. The CDC formally recommended COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women, a stance later echoed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The Trump administration under Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. later distanced itself from routine federal recommendations for vaccination during pregnancy.

Expanding Investigation

The text-message release is part of a broader effort led by Paul and Johnson to scrutinize Fauci’s pandemic decisions. Previously, Paul released over 1,000 pages of Fauci’s pandemic diaries before subpoenaing him to testify. These diaries documented internal deliberations about the origins of COVID-19, government responses, and public messaging challenges. Paul has accused Fauci of misleading Congress and the public about COVID-19 origins and China-related research, claims Fauci consistently denies.

Fauci’s Legal Stance

The text release followed a Senate committee decision, based on party lines, to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress due to his refusal to answer questions. Fauci cited the Fifth Amendment, contending that Paul’s calls for prosecution posed legal risks. Fauci’s attorney affirmed that he exercised a valid constitutional right. Paul insists Fauci should not invoke the Fifth Amendment, given a preemptive pardon issued by former President Joe Biden, which covers potential federal offenses. Fauci’s supporters maintain that the pardon does not protect him from all future charges, permitting Fifth Amendment application. Legal experts remain divided on this interpretation.

Potential Future Releases

Johnson and Paul suggest further records from Fauci’s phone may be disclosed after thorough staff review. The device purportedly contains tens of thousands of text messages and hundreds of voicemails, which may uncover more about the decision-making processes during the pandemic.
