Tampa Bay Buccaneers Look to Strengthen Their Pass Rush with Al-Quadin Muhammad

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defense came up short in striking fear into opposing quarterbacks during the 2025 season. YaYa Diaby led the team with 7.0 sacks, but the overall defensive line finished with a middling performance in terms of sacks.

Two key players from last season, Vita Vea and Lavonte David, will no longer be part of the defense. Vea, who recorded 4.5 sacks, formally requested a trade before training camp, while David, with 3.5 sacks, chose retirement in the offseason.

Returning players like SirVocea Dennis, Anthony Nelson, Tykee Smith, and Elijah Roberts, who combined for modest sack numbers, remain on the roster. However, they do not seem poised for a significant uptick in impact for the upcoming season. The team looks to new additions Rueben Bain Jr. and Mo Kamara to contribute, but expectations remain cautious given their inexperience.

Enter Al-Quadin Muhammad, a crucial reinforcement for the Buccaneers’ pass rush.

Standing 6’3″ and weighing 250lbs, the 31-year-old defensive lineman signed a one-year contract for $6 million. The 2025 season saw Muhammad make a noteworthy impact with 11.0 sacks, 9.0 tackles for loss, and 25 tackles for the Detroit Lions.

Previously under the spotlight for teams like the New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, and Chicago Bears, Muhammad finally left a strong impression last year. With a chance to further prove his abilities in Tampa Bay, he could offer more dynamism to the Buccaneers’ defense.

Muhammad’s skills will complement those of Diaby, Bain, and Vea, providing exciting matchups against NFC South’s offensive lines. The Carolina Panthers feature inexperienced tackles, with one as a rookie and another as a new team member. In Atlanta, the Falcons rely on a line composed of players in their 30s, while the Saints’ line, though adequate, lacks exceptional power.
