Derek Carr Joins UCLA as Special Advisor After NFL Retirement

Following his retirement after the 2024 NFL season, Derek Carr, former quarterback of the Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints, has chosen to remain off the field despite rumors suggesting he might return. However, he has made a noteworthy move by joining the UCLA football team as a special advisor, as announced on Monday. Carr, a four-time Pro Bowler and once a leader in NCAA passing yards and touchdowns, will offer his expertise to the team, working closely with new head coach Bob Chesney.

Carr expressed his admiration for UCLA general manager Darrick Yray in a statement, saying, “I’ve known Darrick for a long time and have great respect for the work he’s done throughout his career.” Carr looks forward to contributing by sharing his experiences and supporting the team’s development.

The opportunity to help coach Chesney, the staff, and the quarterbacks at UCLA was one that really excited me. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences and helping support the program in any way I can, Carr stated.

UCLA confirmed that Carr’s role will include assisting with game-planning strategy and working directly with the Bruins’ quarterbacks.

During Carr’s 11-year NFL career, he amassed 41,245 yards, 257 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions, achieving a passer rating of 92.8. Yet, his collegiate performance showcased even more impressive numbers. Over four seasons with Fresno State—with three as a starter—Carr threw for 12,843 yards, 113 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions.

He led Fresno State to a 20-6 record in his last two seasons, with an outstanding 5,083 yards, 50 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in his final year. Carr earned recognition as a two-time Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and the 2013 Sammy Baugh Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s top passer.
