He acknowledged that conservatives are exploiting the controversy for political gains but argued that the WNBA’s failure to establish clear rules contributed to the issue. Smith emphasized the need for the league to provide definitive guidelines, especially concerning the involvement of transgender athletes in women’s sports.

Smith pointed out that the league’s lack of leadership has allowed debate over gender eligibility to dominate discussions. He cited former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White as examples of how political opponents exploit the situation. By declaring for the WNBA draft, both athletes challenge existing eligibility criteria, highlighting the league’s vulnerabilities.
