New Jersey Voter Fraud Spurs SAVE Act Discussion

Congressman Chip Roy has emphasized the need for the Save America Act due to a voter fraud incident in New Jersey. A ‘software glitch’ led to 6,600 non-citizens registering to vote, with hundreds participating in the election. Roy highlights this as a reason to support voter ID laws, noting that 80% of Americans are in favor.

Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey has shown support for voter ID laws in the state while criticizing President Trump’s broader SAVE Act, labeling it as ‘voter suppression.’ According to a spokesperson, Sherrill supports current ID requirements for voter registration and is open to stronger proposals to ensure fair elections.

Sherrill’s stance presents an opportunity for New Jersey Republicans to advocate for voter ID, despite her opposition to the federal SAVE Act. Her office has reiterated her opposition, describing the SAVE Act as an ‘extreme voter suppression bill.’

“I’m very opposed to the SAVE Act,” Sherrill stated. “It is a tool of voter suppression aimed at collecting New Jerseyans’ personal information for federal systems.”

Sherrill has faced criticism for a Motor Vehicle Commission error that improperly registered about 6,600 individuals who were not U.S. citizens. Less than 400 of these individuals voted, and the state has removed over 4,500 registrations while reviewing remaining cases.

New Jersey Assembly Minority Leader John DiMaio views Sherrill’s comments as a shift, with Republicans advocating for voter ID over the years but encountering Democratic leadership roadblocks.

DiMaio explained, “We’ve been pushing for voter ID and election reforms. The issue lies with Democratic legislative leadership denying hearings and votes.” He noted that the Motor Vehicle System failure highlights flaws in election safeguards.

Voter-ID requirements have fueled partisan debates, with Democrats and voting-rights groups opposing stringent measures that could restrict eligible voters. A notable issue arose in Georgia in 2021, causing national backlash and event relocations.

A representative from Sherrill’s office expressed, “Governor Sherrill values every citizen’s right to vote. She is against MAGA Republican voter suppression attempts.” Initiatives like the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act have been supported to prevent voter intimidation and discrimination.

President Trump continues to focus on noncitizens on voter rolls, advocating for the SAVE America Act. This legislation would require proof of U.S. citizenship and photo ID for federal election processes.

“I believe they should pass Voter I.D.,” Trump confirmed, citing the SAVE America Act. “It’s essential.”
