NBA Prioritizes European Viewership with 2026-27 Season Opener

The NBA, recognized as a global league, is reaffirming its international appeal with the start of the 2026-27 regular season. On Tuesday, Oct. 20, the Detroit Pistons will host the Boston Celtics, commencing the season with a game scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.

This timing is unusual for North American fans, many of whom will be at work. However, the early tip-off caters to European audiences. The Boston-Detroit game will be at 9 p.m. local time in London, aligning with primetime viewing hours across Europe.

NBC and Peacock will broadcast the season opener. Despite a focus on NBC’s broadcast, NBA viewership on Prime across Europe soared by 129% compared to the previous season. Finals also saw a jump of 130% in Europe, reflecting strong interest.

The Celtics-Pistons game will not be the only highlight. The Philadelphia 76ers will take on the New York Knicks, and the Oklahoma City Thunder will face the San Antonio Spurs as part of the opening day’s festivities.

NBA’s partnership with NBCUniversal means games will consistently reach European fans via Sky Sports. Additionally, NBA regular-season games are planned for Paris and Manchester in January 2027, expanding the league’s presence further into Europe.
