The New York Jets are transforming their Player Performance Center, aiming for a facility that accommodates growth and innovation. Owner Woody Johnson has doubled the facility’s size to improve aspects crucial for the upcoming seasons.
Johnson highlighted the investment in modern training staff and advanced performance systems to support players. The new space, 250% larger, will enhance training capacity and centralize areas such as strength conditioning, recovery, and nutrition. He stated in a release, “We have already integrated top-notch equipment in our interim facility, giving our team access to some of the league’s finest training resources.”
New technology such as vibroacoustic recovery pods, multimodal wellness chambers, pneumatic resistance equipment, and a custom AI-powered player performance app will be included. Erik Korem, the director of player performance, emphasizes a holistic health and performance ecosystem as their goal.
The renovation is a key part of the Jets’ Phase 2 at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center, focusing not just on increasing the physical space but redesigning player processes around assessment, training, practice, fueling, and recovery. The project aims for an advanced ecosystem with a focus on holistic improvement. The new two-story center expands space significantly, accommodating distinct zones for strength, power, speed, and mobility work, while improving nutrition and recovery infrastructures.
“We are building a holistic health and human performance ecosystem,” Korem said. “We’re taking significant steps in our departments, including strength and conditioning, nutrition, sports science, and recovery. Data and AI are part of it, but it goes beyond.”
Players also benefit during construction from a temporary facility, already in use, with a space over 70% larger than the previous weight room. The Jets demolished the old facility in July and outfitted the interim space with new equipment. This move aligns with a directive from team leaders to ensure the project doesn’t hinder short-term preparedness.
Individualized training is a highlight of the center, moving from group programs to specific prescriptions. Different player roles demand varied physical regimens. Frequent assessments enable personalized enhancements, such as adjustments for strength or speed needs. The team’s custom app aids in organizing these inputs, creating tailored advice. As Korem notes, “More tools and data allow for more precise training programs and interventions.”
The facility integrates various technologies, like 3D motion capture and force plates, enhancing athlete analysis and readiness assessments. A systematic use of tools like computer vision and connected resistance systems allows real-time analysis of lifts and readiness. Though technology sharpens the coaches’ insights, it won’t replace careful judgment.
Recovery processes are integral, involving unique tools like the TERSA SAVA Sound Pod, enhancing relaxation through music and vibration. Another is the Ammortal Chamber, combining several recovery techniques. These devices supplement the main recovery practices, including load management, sleep, hydration, and nutrition.
Nutrition serves as key performance infrastructure, championed by the director of performance nutrition, Carmen Spencer. The staff collaborates with chefs to ensure players receive proper nutrition. Tailored nutrition plans address different needs, such as in-game performance or recovery fuels.
The renovation is a response to previous shortcomings, aiming to elevate player resources and experiences. It transforms the training environment, ensuring the hardest work and highest standards support players on and off the field. Although no technology guarantees victory, the integrated center identifies needs, allows for recovery, and prepares players for game demands.
The Jets’ investment is not only in equipment but in skilled professionals who maximize its use. According to Korem, “It’s the whole ecosystem of people and resources that make any type of building come to life.”
