Jennifer Esposito opened up about her long struggle with health issues that affected her career and led to severe depression. In a conversation on Maria Menounos’ ‘Heal Squad’ podcast, Esposito shared her story of misdiagnoses and the eventual discovery of her celiac disease.
Early Struggles in New York
Esposito, 53, recounted how her acting career in New York City came to a halt due to unexplained health problems. She faced both mental and physical challenges that forced her to pause her budding career.
Years before receiving a correct diagnosis, Esposito described suffering from deep depression and having suicidal thoughts as doctors struggled to determine the underlying cause of her ailments. At one point, there were discussions of shock treatment due to her sensitivity to medication.
“I was on so many medications, and they even considered shock treatment because of my lack of response,” Esposito recalled.
Link to Nutrition
Esposito began to suspect a connection between her symptoms and her diet. Her health significantly worsened while filming the ABC comedy ‘Samantha Who?’.
She detailed how she experienced severe physical symptoms, including hair and nail loss. The situation turned alarming when a tooth fell out during a scene.
Doctors misdiagnosed her several times with conditions like multiple sclerosis and irritable bowel syndrome. A psychiatrist even suggested her problems stemmed from stress.
Diagnosis and Recovery
Esposito reached a critical moment while driving to a non-denominational church, desperate for help, as her symptoms seemed insurmountable. An accident involving debris smashing through her windshield prompted her to continue searching for answers.
Two days later, a doctor diagnosed her with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten. This helped explain why her liver was failing at the time.
Receiving this diagnosis marked the beginning of a challenging recovery. Esposito cut gluten from her diet. However, her severe nutritional deficiencies made the healing process difficult. She was sensitive to light and took medication like Klonopin to manage her symptoms.
Reflecting on the Journey
Esposito eventually found a medical expert interested in studying her severe case, and she participated in regular medical testing. A misunderstanding during one appointment led to her being briefly admitted to a psychiatric ward, an experience that reinforced her commitment to understanding her condition.
Reflecting on her journey, Esposito said her diagnosis ultimately saved her life. She embraced a healthier, more balanced lifestyle and has shared her experiences to help others facing similar challenges.
She emphasized the importance of healing the gut, urging people to give recovery time and focus on their health.
Now living outside the United States, Esposito enjoys a slower pace of life, prioritizing time spent with others and engaging in activities like shared meals without distractions.
Esposito believes her celiac diagnosis transformed her life for the better, moving her away from the harmful stress of her previous lifestyle.
