Rising Phone Thefts in London Cause Alarm Among Tourists

Tens of thousands of smartphones have been reported stolen in recent years in London. For some, losing a phone is just the beginning of their troubles.

Alex Pikula, visiting London from Chicago in May 2024, had his phone snatched by a rider on an e-bike. Initially, Pikula thought it was an unfortunate incident but nothing more.

His mother soon received disturbing texts from someone claiming to possess her son’s emails and bank details. The messages escalated to threats involving a gun and potential assault, insisting she disconnect her son’s Apple ID from the stolen phone.

A Growing Concern for London

Pikula knew recovery of his phone by the police was unlikely. In 2024, a record 81,000 phones were reported stolen in London. Although this number decreased to roughly 71,000 the next year, thefts remain a concern for both locals and tourists.

The Metropolitan Police began targeting international networks involved in shipping stolen phones, particularly to China, where they end up on the black market. Despite these efforts, the public remains wary of the continuing theft problem.
