Severe Storms in Northwest Indiana Leave Extensive Damage

A severe storm hit Northwest Indiana, resulting in widespread damage and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. In Portage, one person died in a house fire. The Portage Fire Department reported difficulties in responding due to storm debris. Investigations continue into an unconfirmed explosion.

NIPSCO noted approximately 288,000 customers without power. Hardest hit areas included Gary, Hammond, Crown Point, and other towns facing similar issues. As of Tuesday afternoon, numerous households remained without electricity, affecting daily life in the affected areas.

Local authorities and emergency services actively worked on clearing roads and restoring services. Merrillville Police Department advised residents to contact 911 only for emergencies and avoid downed power lines. Mayor Rick Bella confirmed significant damage, including winds up to 100 MPH.

Portage declared a state of emergency, converting council chambers into a command center. Mayor Austin Bonta stated that priority was clearing roads for emergency services. Woodland Park served as an emergency shelter for those unable to stay safely in their homes.

The impact on local infrastructure extended to schools. Portage Township Schools postponed the start of the new academic year due to damage. Communication Director Melissa Deavers emphasized assessing campus safety and coordinating recovery with city officials.

South Shore Line service was disrupted, particularly on the Monon Corridor route, due to downed trees and damaged power lines.

Residents like Tiffany Gonzales faced roadblocks due to fallen trees but took personal action to clear paths. Gonzales, accompanied by several local helpers, ensured safe passage and checked on her animals at home.

City officials in Gary, Hammond, and other affected areas encouraged avoiding unnecessary travel to prevent hindering recovery efforts. Residents were urged to report storm-related hazards to respective city departments.
