Key Primary Elections Set Stage for High-Stakes Political Battles

Polls have closed in South Carolina and Vermont, marking a significant evening of primary elections. Key races include the battle for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s seat and the impact of former President Donald Trump’s endorsements.

South Carolina Senate Primary

In South Carolina, Sen. Darline Graham, sister of the late Sen. Graham, is Trump’s pick in the special Republican primary. She was appointed by GOP Gov. Henry McMaster to finish her brother’s term. However, contenders such as Reps. Ralph Norman, Russell Fry, and former Gov. Mark Sanford pose strong competition.

Midwest Democratic Contests

Focus has shifted to the Midwest, with major Democratic battles in Wisconsin and Minnesota. After Abdul El-Sayed’s narrow win in Michigan’s Senate primary, Wisconsin and Minnesota are the next battlegrounds for left-wing and center-left factions.

“Michigan proved that working people are ready for something different, and Wisconsin is next,” wrote Francesca Hong, aiming for the Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

Francesca Hong, a Democratic Socialists of America member and state representative, is leading in Wisconsin. She aims to increase the state minimum wage and implement a moratorium on AI data centers. Despite past controversies over defunding the police, Hong now focuses on public safety.

Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany, backed by Trump, is the frontrunner for the GOP nomination. Concerns exist about Hong’s impact on down-ballot races if she wins.

Minnesota Senate Race

In Minnesota, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and Rep. Angie Craig compete for the Democratic Senate nomination as Sen. Tina Smith retires. A victory for Flanagan, backed by Sen. Sanders and Warren, might strengthen GOP chances in a state leaning Democratic.

Michele Tafoya, supported by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, leads the GOP race for the Senate with competitors like Adam Schwarze and Royce White.

Additional Key Races

Other notable primaries include Minnesota’s gubernatorial race. Gov. Tim Walz won’t seek another term, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar remains the favorite for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

In Connecticut, Gov. Ned Lamont faces leftward primary challenges, while in Vermont, Republican Gov. Phil Scott is unopposed as he seeks a sixth term. Alabama conducts special primaries following redistricting issues.
