Smithsonian Museum Plans Thwarted by Political Disputes

Efforts to establish a Smithsonian museum on the National Mall have failed following disagreements among lawmakers. Republican leaders included provisions concerning “biological women” and presidential authority over the museum’s location.

The proposal dictated that the museum should be built west of the Smithsonian Castle. However, it also allowed President Donald Trump to select another site.

Transgender rights debates and President Trump’s extensive initiatives to alter Washington interrupted the bipartisan push to create a women’s history museum. This proposal had gathered momentum over the past decade but now faces significant obstacles.
