Christina Bohannan’s Voting Record and Congressional Campaign

Christina Bohannan, a former Democratic state representative, is currently under scrutiny for missing almost half of her votes during her last year in Iowa’s House of Representatives as she campaigned for a congressional seat. In 2022, Bohannan was absent for 348 out of 773 floor votes, totaling around 45%, despite her previous emphasis on the need for leaders to be present. This was revealed by legislative records.

Bohannan is running for Congress in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, a key battleground where the Cook Political Report places the race as a “toss-up”. Republicans aim to maintain their slim majority in the House of Representatives during this election.

The votes she missed included several significant bills. These concerned protections for sexual abuse victims, support for volunteer firefighters and first responders, Iowa’s dairy industry, agricultural initiatives, emergency 911 services, and juvenile justice reform.

According to Emily Tuttle, spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee, Bohannan’s actions contradict her own words about leadership. Tuttle stated, “Liberal Christina Bohannan says leaders should ‘show up’ and then is a no-show herself.” She further criticized Bohannan for taking a taxpayer-funded salary while missing her responsibilities, suggesting such performance would lead to dismissal in any other job.

In a previous post from October 6, 2025, Bohannan shared her experience speaking with over 100 voters at a forum. She highlighted the importance of direct communication with Iowans during uncertain times. An interview with Bleeding Heartland in 2021 depicted her intent to divide her time between legislative work and her congressional campaign for the 2022 session.

Bohannan served a single term in the Iowa House from 2021 to 2023 before pursuing her congressional campaign. She is running against incumbent Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, aiming to win after losing in previous elections by a narrow margin.

During her earlier efforts on the campaign trail, Bohannan remained on the legislative payroll. In 2022, Iowa lawmakers received a $25,000 annual salary along with a $175 daily per diem for up to 100 days, amounting to an additional $17,500.

Bohannan has also faced criticism for previous remarks and her campaign messaging focused on middle-class values. Reports have cited her warnings that Iowa might appear “backwards” due to limits on diversity training in schools and universities. Additionally, Bohannan and her husband own a waterfront condo in Sarasota, Florida, valued between $500,001 and $1 million, alongside a $1.55 million home in Iowa City. These properties contrast her political image as a middle-class advocate.
