Overview of the Situation
Customers using Verizon across the United States experienced extensive service problems on Wednesday. Downdetector, a platform that logs outage reports, recorded over 2,400 instances as of 1:10 p.m. ET. A marked increase in complaints was observed from mid-morning onward.
Verizon, through its Verizon Wireless subsidiary, offers nationwide mobile, landline, and broadband services. However, the company had not immediately offered comments regarding the outage’s cause. The duration of these disruptions remains uncertain.
Affected Services and Areas
Most issues reported concerned mobile phone disruptions, although 5G Home Internet and mobile internet problems were also noted. A Downdetector heat map showcased report clusters in major cities including Albuquerque, Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia.
Data from Google Trends accessed at 1:30 p.m. ET indicated a high concentration of Google searches for “Verizon” originating from New Mexico in the last hour.
Resolution and Customer Guidance
Currently, there are no updates on when the outage will be resolved. Verizon has explained that outages occur when an unexpected event disrupts numerous cell sites at once, which cuts off voice, data, and messaging services for users in affected areas.
During such events, customers may notice a Network Notification upon logging into My Verizon, which provides information on affected services and updates on repair status. The company does not provide a universal restoration timeline, as outage durations depend on the disruption’s cause, the affected sites, and repair speed.
Verizon advises customers to regularly check the network status page for real-time updates. If no outage is listed yet service remains down, users should attempt troubleshooting steps such as restarting their device, verifying coverage, and ensuring Airplane Mode is off.
In a prolonged outage, using Wi-Fi and enabling Wi-Fi Calling can help maintain voice and data services. Devices will automatically reconnect when service resumes, although a restart may facilitate a fresh signal connection.
For Verizon-confirmed outages lasting more than 24 consecutive hours, customers on standard monthly plans may request a bill credit within 180 days.
This situation is continuing to develop. Stay tuned for updates.
