Bob Iger, Once a Clippers Fan, Buys Stake in the Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers have been sold for $12.5 billion to a new ownership group. This group includes former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner. Remarkably, Iger previously admitted he couldn’t root for the Lakers, favoring the Clippers instead.
From Courtside to Ownership
Bob Iger’s involvement in the Lakers’ purchase is unexpected, considering his past support for their rivals, the Clippers. In an appearance on ‘The Old Man and the Three’ podcast in January 2021, Iger explained his reluctance to back the Lakers. He cited his lifelong support for the New York Knicks as a reason for his stance. The Clippers attracted him not only because of his allegiance to underdogs but also due to pragmatic reasons. “Their seats were a lot cheaper than the Lakers,” Iger commented.
A Lucrative Deal
The Lakers’ sale comes after billionaire Mark Walter agreed to purchase the Buss family’s controlling stake at a $10 billion valuation in 2025. Within 14 months, Walter’s decision to sell for $12.5 billion marks a swift and substantial profit. Reports indicate Walter’s business dealings face federal scrutiny. Although there is no evidence the investigation necessitated the sale, the quick transaction raises questions.
Resources and Plot Twists
Bob Iger, known for his resources and extensive business acumen, now holds a stake in the Lakers. This development surprises many given his history of supporting the Clippers. His transition from being a Knicks loyalist and Clippers fan to a Lakers owner underscores an unexpected twist in his sports journey.
