A large ballistic missile assault struck Kyiv early on Sunday, wounding at least five people. This followed threats from Moscow to retaliate for attacks in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine.
Authorities and journalists from Agence France-Presse reported loud explosions in the Ukrainian capital, which caused a residential building near the government district to shake. Dozens of residents sought shelter in an underground metro station.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, wrote on Telegram, “The capital has come under a mass ballistic missile attack.” Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that five people had been injured, one of whom required hospitalization.
Residents huddled in metro stations as the air attack unfolded on May 24, 2026. Sources reported several areas affected, including Shevchenkivsky, Dniprovsky, and Podilsky districts. Fires and damage to residential buildings have been indicated,” Tkachenko added.
“A strike drone attack is ongoing; the ballistic missile threat remains present. Stay in shelters!”
The attack occurred after warnings from Ukrainian authorities and the U.S. Embassy about a possible major assault, connected to previous Ukrainian strikes on Russian-held areas. A drone attack, launched from Thursday to Friday, marked one of the deadliest Ukrainian strikes in months, with more than 18 people killed in the occupied Lugansk region.
Moscow indicated targets included a college dormitory, and accused Ukraine of killing civilians. Ukraine countered, stating it hit a Russian drone unit in Starobilsk. Russia’s foreign ministry promised severe repercussions.
Both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the U.S. Embassy issued warnings about an impending Russian airstrike. Zelenskyy highlighted preparations for a combined strike, potentially involving nuclear-capable hypersonic missiles.
The U.S. Embassy cautioned about a significant air attack potentially occurring within the next 24 hours. Ukraine frequently strikes Russian-occupied territories with drones, justifying actions as responses to Russian aggression.
Further casualties were recorded as Russian authorities recovered more bodies from the attack site in Lugansk, bringing the death toll to 18. Many victims were young women, as reported by Leonid Pasechnik, the Moscow-backed governor.
The United Nations condemned attacks on civilians and infrastructure globally, though it could not confirm specifics due to restricted access. Starobilsk, situated close to the front line, was taken by Russia early in the 2022 offensive.
Kyiv has increased its drone capability, targeting undisputed Russian territories, including residential zones and oil infrastructure. Meanwhile, Moscow subjects Ukraine to frequent missile and drone barrages, impacting infrastructure and civilians, while denying deliberate targeting of non-combatants.
Efforts, led by the U.S., to negotiate peace have stalled, partly due to its growing focus on Middle Eastern conflicts.
