Maryland Faces Challenges as Key Defensive Player Suffers Injury
The Maryland Terrapins football team is on the brink of an important season under head coach Mike Locksley. A major setback has occurred during training camp, impacting the team’s defensive lineup for the upcoming fall. According to Pete Nakos of On3, defensive end Zahir Mathis sustained an injury during a practice session that has sidelined him for the season. Details about the specific injury remain unclear.
Mathis was a standout player in his freshman year, showcasing significant potential with notable stats. Standing six feet six inches tall and weighing 220 pounds, he recorded 22 tackles, six sacks, and 8.5 tackles for loss in the 2025 season. His six sacks were close behind teammate Sidney Stewart, who led with seven sacks.
The Terrapins were keen on keeping Mathis as questions loomed over Locksley’s tenure. Locksley, with a record of 37-49 over his eight seasons, saw Maryland achieve only four wins in each of the last two years, with two being Big Ten conference victories.
In November, Maryland’s athletic director Jim Smith emphasized the importance of retaining key players and improving recruitment strategies to support the head coach. Mathis, alongside Stewart and quarterback Malik Washington, formed a promising trio of freshmen who showed potential for the program.
“We are working to strengthen our NIL support for 2026 and beyond and have already seen success for next year,” said Smith. “We are prioritizing roster retention, recruiting and competing in the transfer portal… We are optimistic about the young talent in our program and where we are in recruiting.”
With Mathis out of the lineup, the team will expect an impactful sophomore season from Stewart. They also look to sophomore defensive end Nahsir Taylor and redshirt sophomore DD Holmes for their pass-rushing abilities. The Terrapins will begin their season facing Hampton at home on September 5, followed by an away game at UConn on September 12, and a home match against Virginia Tech on September 19.
