Crowley and Tiffany Face Off in Pivotal Wisconsin Gubernatorial Race
David Crowley has achieved a narrow victory in the Democratic primary, setting the stage for a Wisconsin governor’s race against Republican U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany. Tiffany has a solid record of supporting former President Donald Trump. This race provides an opportunity for moderate Democrats, as Trump’s approval has declined in this key swing state.
During the primary, Crowley surpassed expectations by defeating Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist considered a front-runner by many analysts. Now, as Crowley looks ahead, he faces Tiffany, a candidate with strong ties to Trump. Crowley, who serves as county executive in Milwaukee, plans to emphasize this connection while seeking to create a broad coalition that includes Hong’s supporters.
“This isn’t a clash between establishment and progressive forces,” Crowley stated. “Our focus should be on defeating MAGA extremist Tom Tiffany.”
According to former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, a known Trump ally, Tiffany can improve his chances by distancing himself from Trump’s unpopular federal policies, as he is running for governor and not Congress. Walker advised Tiffany to focus on gubernatorial responsibilities rather than previous national policies.
Former Republican State Senate Majority Leader Dale Schultz highlighted the challenges Tiffany faces against Crowley. He suggested that Crowley’s presence might force Tiffany’s campaign to discuss pressing issues like affordable healthcare and international concerns.
Tiffany’s voter base is largely rural and conservative. In previous elections, Trump won this demographic. However, the state’s contests have historically been tight, evident from Crowley’s recent narrow primary win.
Democrats are optimistic about moving their campaign focus to Tiffany, a perceived vulnerable opponent. They aim to leverage Trump’s dwindling approval ratings in their bid to maintain control of the governor’s office while seeking to win both legislative chambers for the first time in over a decade.
Tiffany has already started countering by painting Crowley as similar to Hong, accusing him of governmental mismanagement and increasing taxes to cover expenses.
Rusty Schultz, a Republican strategist, notes that Crowley may face hurdles in engaging young voters, many of whom backed Hong in the primary.
Crowley’s primary victory was particularly unexpected, given his temporary departure from the race in July when he saw no path forward. His re-entry, with the substantial backing of Democratic Governor Tony Evers, bolstered his campaign. Crowley’s collaborative work with the Republican-controlled Legislature on local government aid is a testament to his bipartisan efforts.
Sharing his upbringing in poverty in Milwaukee’s north side, Crowley highlights his legislative and executive experiences to connect with voters.
Crowley made history as the first Black person to receive a major party nomination for Wisconsin governor. He aims to be the first Black governor in Wisconsin and only the fourth nationwide. Crowley remains focused on the future, determined to pave the way for others to follow.
