Nick Reiner Indicted in Parents’ Murder Case

Actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were tragically killed on December 14 in their Brentwood, Los Angeles home. Their son, Nick Reiner, faces murder charges in their deaths. A secret Los Angeles County grand jury indicted him, emphasizing he may have been lying in wait, which suggests premeditation.

The indictment for 32-year-old Nick Reiner was announced on July 20 and unsealed Wednesday, when he pled not guilty. If the lying in wait allegation is proven, along with a murder conviction, it could lead to the death penalty, although prosecutors have not decided on pursuing it.

“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman.

Few Details Revealed in Public Indictment

The unsealed indictment offered little new information. It confirmed the couple was stabbed but did not specify the methods of premeditation. The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner hinted at autopsy details but is barred from releasing them by court order.

As of now, possible motives are unclear. Prosecutors have remained silent, and the case remains mostly secretive.

Trust Fund Dispute

The indictment came amidst Nick Reiner’s request for funds from a trust established by his parents. He claims the trust fund trustees unjustly denied him financial access meant for his defense. The trust reportedly holds at least $1.5 million.

Reiner seeks to rehire Alan Jackson, a criminal defense attorney who initially represented him. His siblings allegedly stopped funding his defense, leading the public defender’s office to step in. A hearing is scheduled for next week.

Reiner married Michele Singer after meeting her during the making of “When Harry Met Sally…,” and they were together for 36 years. Their son, Nick, co-wrote the 2015 film “Being Charlie” with his father, reflecting on his own struggles with addiction and homelessness.

Nick’s brother, Jake Reiner, described the heartbreak and incomprehensible nature of losing their parents and having Nick implicated in their deaths as a “living nightmare.”
