Israeli soldiers stood guard alongside settlers in front of Palestinian homes in the village of Qusra, located south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank. The situation unfolded on Wednesday, with U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, condemning the siege by Jewish settlers on an American Palestinian family’s home. He labeled the ongoing events as a ‘horrific act of terror.’
Local reports indicate that since Sunday, settlers have been gathering around the home in Qusra, harassing the family inside and defying the Israeli military’s attempts to deescalate the tension. Groups of up to dozens have been seen throwing stones, trying to demolish a nearby stone wall, and obstructing the family’s access to supplies.
Lou Ridi, the homeowner, hailing from Ohio, informed The Associated Press by phone about the dire circumstances. His brother, aged 48, and nephew have been confined within the house without access to food or water for several days. On Thursday morning, Israeli military forces evacuated Ridi’s brother, Qusai Abu Rida, and his teenage son. However, the fate of the house and other properties under threat remains uncertain.
In an attempt to reestablish order, Israeli troops intervened, reportedly dismantling ‘two illegal outposts’ near Qusra and detaining one Israeli. Reinforcement of soldiers has been dispatched to the area, approximately 16 kilometers from the Palestinian city of Nablus, to conduct defensive operations and patrols. Journalists attempting to access Qusra reported roadblocks leading into the village, and Israeli police have yet to comment on whether any Israeli civilians were arrested.
Critics, including Palestinians and the Israeli opposition, accuse Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline administration of neglecting acts of aggression by settlers against Palestinians, which have intensified over recent years. Huckabee’s statement on X strongly criticized this violence, despite voicing support for the Israeli military’s interventions. Historically, Huckabee has maintained a close relationship with Israel’s settler community, supporting Israel’s control over the West Bank while denouncing acts of violence by settlers.
Home security footage from the incident shows settlers near a damaged stone wall by Ridi’s house. Ridi contends that months of harassment by settlers culminated in recent escalations, with water and electricity being cut, as well as stone-throwing that damaged his property and another house nearby. ‘We are prisoners in our own house, hostages in our own house,’ he stated.
The situation in Qusra deteriorated further last month when a mosque was set ablaze in what appeared to be another settler attack. The incident followed the killing of an Israeli settler, sparking violence that resulted in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinian villagers.
Meanwhile, settlers continue establishing more outposts, actions widely denounced by the international community as detrimental to any remaining prospects of a Palestinian state in the West Bank. Palestinians assert that the land, occupied by Israel in the 1967 war, should constitute part of a future state. Conversely, many settlers and their supporters claim the entire area should be part of Israel for historical, religious, and security reasons.
