Lawmakers Demand Clarity on USS Abraham Lincoln’s Conditions

Several Democratic lawmakers are seeking explanations from the Pentagon and Navy regarding conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Reports have surfaced alleging multiple U.S. service members on the carrier tried to jump overboard due to deteriorating situations.

Families of the approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines on the USS Abraham Lincoln claim at least two personnel attempted to jump, citing worsening conditions, insufficient provisions, and declining mental health. The carrier embarked from San Diego in November and has remained at sea for over 200 days, following a reroute from the Pacific to the Middle East due to the U.S. conflict with Iran, which commenced in February.

Initial complaints emerged in April about the ship’s conditions, which the Navy denied, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth dismissed as false. A U.S. Navy spokesperson informed Newsweek that no increase in reported suicidal ideation or attempts has been observed. The spokesperson emphasized the availability of religious, medical, and mental health professionals to address concerns.

On Monday, Democratic Representative Mike Levin from California reported sailors facing a lack of basic hygiene supplies, moldy showers, broken toilets, inadequate hot water, and insufficient food. Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego urged the Navy to permit bipartisan Congressional visits for an oversight investigation.

Senator Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut highlighted in a letter to Secretary Hegseth the inherent dangers of aircraft carriers under regular conditions, worsened by extended sea periods causing fatigue, deferred maintenance, and limited rest opportunities. The Lincoln’s deployment spans nearly nine months, with only a brief port call in Guam in December. Typically, carrier deployments range from six to seven months with periodic port calls for refueling and crew rest.
