Austin Cowan, a headhunter for Fortune 100 companies, initially anticipated a stable year. He expected market fluctuations and corporate deliberations about AI’s impact on business. However, Heidrick & Struggles, the executive talent firm where Cowan is employed, has received numerous requests for executives who can manage security breaches and protect data. There is also a need for individuals skilled in technical code review.

“Roles that typically come along every 12 months, we’re seeing those roles come along every week,” Cowan observed. “I think it’s driven by fear and uncertainty in this AI arms race.”

This surge in demand is not isolated to Heidrick & Struggles. In Silicon Valley, AI is causing job upheavals, and technology’s associated risks are driving a new wave of cybersecurity hiring. Search firms are so overwhelmed that some are declining clients due to a shortage of qualified candidates.

According to Glassdoor, a job search platform, cybersecurity job postings grew by 11 percent in the first quarter compared to the previous year. This increase is linked to tech workers using AI to develop code, which often introduces bugs and vulnerabilities. Recent AI technologies, like Anthropic’s Mythos model, have been flagged for possibly finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities, simplifying the process of hacking into company infrastructure.
