Chicago’s Struggles with Education and Governance

In Chicago, an alarming situation has emerged as over 50 schools report that not a single student has achieved math proficiency. This statistic highlights a significant challenge within the city’s educational system.

The term ‘wicked problem’ is often used in social science to describe issues that seem impossible to solve due to those in power being resistant to change. Chicago is often viewed this way because of persistent governance issues. However, recent efforts have aimed at dismantling the entrenched political mechanisms contributing to the city’s challenges.

Stacy Davis Gates, President of CTU Local 1, addressed these issues during a rally in Chicago on May Day in 2025. Her speech focused on advocating for workers and challenging the influence of billionaires on the city’s policies.
