Voters Decide in Primaries for Redrawn Districts in Alabama

Four of Alabama’s seven congressional districts are currently conducting primary elections under a newly established map that primarily benefits the Republican Party. This redrawing of districts follows Alabama Governor Kay Ivey’s decision to postpone the primaries after a significant Supreme Court ruling in April.

The Supreme Court’s decision weakened certain aspects of the Voting Rights Act, allowing Republicans to modify districts. This resulted in the removal of one of two districts where Black voters previously formed the majority. This change has significantly influenced the political landscape in Alabama.

Notably, former President Donald Trump has lent his support to certain candidates within these restructured districts. He has endorsed former congressman Jerry Carl, as well as Rhett Marques, a state representative from Alabama, in their respective races. This endorsement could potentially influence the outcome of the primaries in these Republican-favored districts.
