AI’s Influence on Modern Campaign Strategies

Artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing the landscape of political campaigns. Candidates at all levels are utilizing AI for creating deepfake attack ads, viral social media posts, and self-promotion.

AI’s use as a political tool varies among parties and races, sparking debates about whether deepfake content, such as realistic videos or audio, could mislead voters or interfere with democracy. Supporters claim AI-generated materials mark an evolution in campaign advertising, building on decades of political cartoons and graphics at reduced costs.

The discussion intensified recently when the American Principles Project (APP) released a digital ad endorsing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The ad portrayed his opponent, Texas state Rep. James Talarico, as a doctor performing gender-reassignment surgery on a young girl. Terry Schilling, APP’s president, likened the employment of AI to the use of political cartoons to convey messages about someone’s policy consequences.

The 30-second ad is reminiscent of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1964 “Daisy” ad, which capitalized on Cold War fears. JT Ennis, spokesperson for Talarico’s campaign, countered by labeling the ad as misinformation, stating Talarico does not support gender-transition surgery for minors.

AI-generated political ads are proliferating nationwide. A previous Paxton ad depicted an AI version of Talarico dressed and singing about transgender children. Other examples include former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt portrayed in a dystopian landscape, while Mayor Karen Bass was depicted as the Joker. Pratt later lost the primary nomination.

In New York, Republican governor candidate Bruce Blakeman faces an ethics complaint concerning AI use against Governor Kathy Hochul. The New York State Democratic Committee’s chair accused the ads of attempting to distort reality.

As AI’s photo, audio, and video capabilities improve, they become more lifelike and accessible. Although some political bodies welcome these advancements, others worry about spreading misinformation, even if savvy viewers understand such content is fictional.
