Gus Rickette Celebrates 100th Birthday with Community Celebration

Gus Rickette, the co-founder of Uncle Remus Saucy Fried Chicken, marked his 100th birthday today. The West Side community organized a celebration to honor his lifelong achievements. Gus and his late wife, Mary, founded the first Uncle Remus Saucy Fried Chicken outlet in 1969, located in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood.

During the event, Gus Rickette was seated between his grandsons, Sir Charles and Quintin Rickette, as they participated in a motorcade along West Madison Street. As they traveled down the street, Gus was moved when he saw his image featured prominently on local billboards.

Prominent figures, including Mayor Brandon Johnson, attended the celebration. The family and friends gathered, despite stormy weather, to honor the legacy of Gus Rickette and the beloved restaurant chain he helped build.
