Chicago White Sox: Young Talent Joins the Roster Amid Strategic Changes

Chicago White Sox pitcher Hagen Smith learned he would take the mound on Sunday during a lengthy 2-hour, 23-minute rain delay. Smith, a recent draft pick, used the delay to keep prepared by staying active in the weight room. When the time came, he warmed up quickly and took his place on the field.

Smith, the No. 5 pick in the 2024 draft, made his major-league debut against the Cleveland Guardians. He pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three, walking four, and not allowing any hits. This performance contributed to the White Sox’s 5-3 victory. “You always dream of this growing up,” Smith reflected. “Debuting after getting drafted was a really special moment.”

Joining Smith on the major-league roster is fellow prospect Tanner McDougal. Both were called up on Saturday. “They have been performing well in Charlotte,” said pitching coach Zach Bove. “Their fresh, strong arms will be a great addition. Hagen adjusted his delivery and added a cutter post-injury, which has been beneficial.”

“I think the changeup is going to be important for Luis in future games,” Bove noted.

Bove also addressed other team strategies, including the recent acquisition of veteran pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners. Castillo allowed five runs on six hits in his first game against Boston Red Sox but showed potential. “The fastball is great,” Bove noted. “The stats weren’t ideal, but there was a lot of weak contact.” Castillo is expected to experiment with more changeups in upcoming outings, expanding his pitching style.

Reliever Huascar Brazobán, acquired from the New York Mets, also impressed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. “His sinker and changeup are reliable,” Bove commented. “He’s eager to contribute and fits well with the team.”

The White Sox continue to enhance their bullpen with Smith and McDougal’s call-up. In a corresponding move, David Sandlin and Noah Schultz were optioned to Triple-A Charlotte. Schultz, a first-round draft pick in 2022, has faced challenges this season with a 3-9 record and a 6.60 ERA in 15 games. “Noah needs to use this time back in Charlotte as a reset,” Bove stated. “Despite being a top prospect, consistency is key for his future growth.”
