Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, has expressed concerns about his party’s recent struggles to connect with working-class voters. He believes the focus on ‘status quo establishment candidates’ is a key factor, as they have not challenged what he terms a rigged economic system. Speaking on ‘Meet the Press’, Khanna shared his thoughts on a report from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) analyzing the party’s losses in the 2024 election.
Khanna highlighted the need to move beyond current political norms. ‘We do need to recognize that the status quo has failed,’ he said. He mentioned that the current economic system has resulted in significant inequality, leaving many working and middle-class Americans behind. He argued that this stems from the party often endorsing candidates who do not address these economic and political failings.
We need to have an economic message that actually is talking to the working-class folks who have been shafted.
During the discussion, NBC’s Kristen Welker referenced the DNC report that claimed Democrats focus too much on ‘winning arguments’ instead of ‘winning elections’, a lesson Republicans have mastered. Khanna disagreed that reasoned debate should be abandoned but agreed that a stronger economic message aimed at financially struggling voters is necessary. ‘I don’t think we need to give up reason,’ he stated, emphasizing that many Americans desire more reasoned debate.
Khanna also evaluated the role of former Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting she should have been more active in pivotal states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ohio, promoting economic policies such as the Inflation Reduction Act and the American Rescue Plan. He suggested this could have potentially improved the party’s performance.
Going forward, Khanna stressed the importance of rebuilding support among working-class voters. He believes focusing on economic inequality and a ‘rigged’ system is critical. He firmly stated that Democrats need a stronger message targeting these issues.
In response to calls for DNC Chair Ken Martin’s resignation, Khanna voiced his support for Martin, highlighting his stance against super PACs in primaries and superdelegate influence. Khanna acknowledged Martin’s shortcomings in handling the DNC report but did not think he should resign. Instead, Khanna encouraged Martin to work more closely with state parties for future elections.
