An Ebola outbreak in Bunia, located in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has triggered global concern. Borders have been closed, and flights rerouted, even impacting the Congolese World Cup team, now quarantined in Belgium.
In Bunia, signs of a structured response are scarce. The expected presence of medical tents, healthcare workers clad in protective gear, and isolated patients is missing. The initial aid setup is in its nascent stages. Workers have begun constructing isolation wards at Bunia’s main hospital to provide necessary treatment and safety to patients.
Ahmed Mahat from the International Medical Corps, working on the isolation units, remarked, “The virus is far ahead of us, and it’s spreading fast.” The world is hastily responding to an outbreak detected only after a significant delay. This delay complicates the international response efforts.
The outbreak is predominantly in Ituri, where Bunia is the provincial capital. Efforts continue to catch up with the fast-moving virus and contain its spread.
