Aviation disaster was averted over Phoenix when two American Airlines aircraft, assigned the same flight number, entered the same airspace. Quick actions by an air traffic controller ensured safe separation of the jets. Both planes operated under the call sign American 2482, with one approaching Phoenix from Chicago and the other departing for Chicago.

An audio recording from air traffic control reveals the controller identifying the duplicate call signs. He issued instructions that successfully distinguished the flights, allowing them to continue their journeys without incident. The controller commented on the situation, expressing relief at the outcome.

The event has sparked increased focus on aviation safety amid several recent incidents. An American Airlines representative stated that both flights maintained required separation due to the diligence of air traffic controllers and pilots. The spokesperson assured that the company is examining the incident.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the issue occurred around midnight on August 14. The air traffic controller’s decision to label the planes ‘departure’ and ‘arrival’ prevented confusion. He advised the departing aircraft to limit altitude, ensuring a safe distance between them.

The controller remarked, ‘I’ve been working air traffic for 25 years. I’ve never seen two aircraft pretty much merge with the same call sign. That’s pretty incredible.’

Flight 2482 usually operates as a round-trip between Chicago and Phoenix, but delays led to a second aircraft taking the same flight number for departure. Typically, one aircraft handles the route. The FAA and American Airlines continue to investigate why identical call signs were assigned.
