In the NFL, players often set new standards with their contracts. Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon is no exception. He has just become the highest-paid cornerback in the league.
Witherspoon agreed to a four-year deal valued at $132 million, with more than $101 million guaranteed. This agreement sets him on top as the highest-paid player at his position in NFL history.
A Quarterback’s Comparison
His contract surpasses that of many well-known quarterbacks. For instance, Dak Prescott’s recent extension places him behind Witherspoon in terms of yearly income. Witherspoon will make an average of $33 million per season. This is higher than the $31 million Denzel Ward secured with the Cleveland Browns in the previous month.
Earnings vs. Performance
Witherspoon, a Pro Bowl player for all his seasons in the NFL thus far, earns more than several top players. His annual income exceeds the deals of Aaron Rodgers with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who earns $22 million annually. It also surpasses Kirk Cousins’ $11.3 million annual salary with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Although with a smaller annual average, Baker Mayfield earns slightly more at $33.3 million from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Yet, Witherspoon’s $101 million in guarantees more than doubles Mayfield’s total guarantees.
In a League of His Own
Witherspoon’s deal matches the earnings of quarterbacks, such as Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, who signed a $33.5 million annual deal with $55 million guaranteed last season. Witherspoon notably surpasses Darnold in the total guarantees offered.
Future Outlook
The NFL’s financial landscape keeps evolving, demonstrating thriving business through these contracts. Witherspoon’s substantial deal signals more lucrative contracts on the horizon.
Across the nation, the New England Patriots and cornerback Christian Gonzalez have engaged in ongoing negotiations for a new agreement. Patriots owner Robert Kraft has expressed intentions to make Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback. The race was between Gonzalez and Witherspoon. Ultimately, Witherspoon concluded the process first, but competition for top contracts remains fierce.
