Florida Man Charged with Murder of Stepfather

A man from Florida, Jose Proano, has been charged with first-degree murder. This follows the killing and dismemberment of his 71-year-old stepfather in Orlando.

Gruesome Discovery

The case came to light when authorities found three suitcases containing human remains near Proano’s mother and stepfather’s home in Orlando, just before midnight on August 4. The suitcases were linked to Jorge Vazquez-Escutia, who had been reported missing by his family a day before the discovery.

According to a court affidavit, Vazquez-Escutia’s family contacted authorities after finding his belongings and what appeared to be blood at his home. Unusual signs included unlocked cars and his unavailability for days.

Security Footage and Investigation

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office asked for public help, as Vazquez-Escutia suffered from memory loss. Security footage showed a man in a black shirt entering the victim’s home and later carrying heavy suitcases away, which appeared to include a human arm.

After the footage and other evidence, detectives sought Proano. His phone records placed him at the scene when the suitcases were moved, further linking him to the crime.

Suspect’s Statements and Previous Record

Upon meeting investigators, Proano described a negative relationship with Vazquez-Escutia. He cited issues like restricted access to his mother and his schizophrenia, which made him worry about family threats.

Previously, Proano had numerous calls to 911 for welfare checks on his mother, all of which found her safe.

Conclusion of the Investigation

On the night of August 4, investigators found the suitcases along a roadway. They contained Vazquez-Escutia’s head and other body parts. Luggage tags matched Proano’s mother’s name.

Proano initially denied involvement but later admitted his phone was present at the scene. Investigators found defensive injuries on him. He was on probation for a previous armed burglary charge from 2022.

Proano remains held without bond. His public defender has not commented on the case. Meanwhile, a fundraiser is supporting Vazquez-Escutia’s family with funeral costs, describing him as a kind and generous person.
