Tommy John, known for his time with the New York Yankees in the 1980s and for the surgical procedure named after him, passed away at 83. Former teammates shared heartfelt tributes honoring the iconic pitcher.
Don Mattingly, once a first baseman for the Yankees and now managing the Philadelphia Phillies, expressed his sorrow. ‘I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend, Tommy John,’ he said in a statement. Both hailing from Indiana, Mattingly highlighted the bond they shared over their Midwest roots while playing in New York. He called John both a great pitcher and the ultimate competitor, offering condolences to John’s family and loved ones.
Willie Randolph, who played alongside John, also shared his sentiments. ‘I have so many fond memories of Tommy, beginning with the years we faced off against the Dodgers in the World Series,’ Randolph recalled. He praised John as a ‘consummate pitcher—a true craftsman on the mound.’ Randolph noted John’s pleasant demeanor and consistency, both on and off the field, as qualities esteemed by teammates.
John’s legacy extends beyond his pitching, credited with pioneering a surgery that transformed sports medicine. His name appeared on the Baseball Writers’ Association of America Hall of Fame ballot from 1995-2009 without reaching the 75 percent threshold for induction. Randolph, remarking on John’s impact, suggested he should be in the Hall of Fame for his influence on baseball and sports medicine.
Dr. Chris Ahmad, the Yankees’ current team physician, also remembered John on social media, reflecting on how John’s courage changed the game and sports medicine, offering hope to injured athletes.
Tommy John’s career spanned several teams, including the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, and Oakland A’s, notching a 288-231 record and a 3.34 ERA across 760 major league games. He had recently undergone treatment for a recurrence of bladder cancer, contributing to the challenges he faced in his final years.
