In July in Washington, D.C., America’s 250th birthday began with an evacuation due to a summer storm. The crowd gathered for fireworks at the National Mall had to move indoors. The event resumed hours later, but nature had already made a clear point.

This summer, many Americans found themselves seeking refuge from the very season typically associated with leisure. In Texas, there was a second once-in-a-thousand-year flood within a year. Indiana recorded an unprecedented 77 tornadoes, and throughout, extreme heat persisted. July experienced the highest temperatures ever recorded in the Lower 48, surpassing the Dust Bowl era record.

In Spokane, Washington, heat, drought, and high winds led to a dangerous brush fire, reportedly started by an arsonist. The fire quickly spread into Ted Chauvin’s neighborhood. He recounted, “We just got the dogs, the cat, the kid, and we just got out.” A recent wildfire in Spokane devastated hundreds of homes, including Chauvin’s. Reflecting on the ruins of his home, Chauvin saw reminders of personal milestones—beating cancer, raising a child, and creating family memories. He shared, “Hearing our kid say, ‘I miss my house,’ is the hardest part.” Washington State has faced its most destructive wildfire season on record.

Author and climate journalist Jeff Goodell has extensively written on the topic. His works, like “The Heat Will Kill You First” and “The Water Will Come,” mirror current climate crises. Goodell noted, “Summer of 2026 is another escalation into a hotter, more dangerous world, as climate scientists anticipated.” He emphasized the connection between these extreme events, stating, “They’re all connected. We’re creating a different world.” Goodell highlighted the importance of acknowledging the problem before adapting to these changes.

Data from the EPA and NOAA shows heat waves now happen three times more often than in the 1960s. Wildfires burn twice as much land annually compared to the 1990s. Across the Atlantic, Europe faced deadly fires and record heat, surpassing previous conditions. The heat in Europe is estimated to have claimed over 10,000 lives, forcing over a quarter million to flee due to wildfires.

Goodell reflected, “Human civilization has evolved in a temperature range we’re now leaving.” Concerning the outdated climate basis of American infrastructure, he stated, “All of it.” He urged adaptation in construction and policymaking.

Trump’s administration previously reversed climate policies, impacting greenhouse gas regulations. Maria Molina, from the University of Maryland, uses AI and historical data to project future climate scenarios. She commented, “While extreme events always occur, their frequency due to warming raises concerns.” The potential for longer wildfire seasons exemplifies how such changes, though statistically minor, drastically affect extreme event likelihood.

Ted Chauvin recognizes these shifts, remarking, “There wasn’t a smoke season in the past.” As Spokane’s future remains uncertain, Chauvin’s emotions reflect the broader climate anxiety. Jeff Goodell expressed concern for future generations and how current actions shape legacies.
