The House Ethics Committee is probing Democratic lawmaker Rep. Jimmy Gomez of California. The investigation pertains to claims of inappropriate sexual contact with a House staff member. This highlights ongoing concerns about misconduct involving aides on Capitol Hill.
Rep. Jimmy Gomez, who entered Congress in 2017, is recognized for establishing and leading the Congressional Dads Caucus. This group advocates for active fatherhood both at home and within Congress. Gomez is married and has one child.
The Ethics Committee has yet to reveal further details. However, it emphasized that the allegations do not automatically imply wrongdoing. Typically, the committee operates privately until it concludes an investigation and releases a report.
Comparatively, an inquiry earlier this year involved Rep. Chuck Edwards, a Republican from North Carolina. He was accused of sexual harassment by two staffers, leading the committee to recommend censure.
Despite denying the accusations, Edwards decided not to seek re-election.
According to past reports, Gomez was allegedly observed in a personal encounter with a younger congressional aide in 2023. He has admitted to having made mistakes in his personal life, acknowledging the harm caused to his family while maintaining that his actions did not breach laws or House rules.
