On August 18, 2026, Ukrainian forces carried out one of their largest drone attacks on Russian soil since Moscow’s invasion started more than four years ago. According to officials, nearly 800 drones were launched just two days after a similar strike.
Meanwhile, a Russian missile aimed at a Ukrainian village in the northeastern Kharkiv region resulted in at least 10 deaths and eight injuries. The attack devastated homes, officials reported.
The ongoing conflict between the nations has seen an increase in long-range aerial assaults. Analysts note that the approximately 780-mile front line in eastern and southern Ukraine presents challenges as drones and ground robots complicate troop movements.
Throughout the past year, Ukraine has developed and used domestically produced long-range drones for deep strikes within Russia. This drone technology has gained attention from global governments and defense manufacturers.
Kyiv officials aim to impose war-related consequences on the Russian public and push President Vladimir Putin towards peace negotiations. So far, Putin has shown no willingness to halt the invasion.
Putin continues to prolong the war instead of accepting Ukraine’s realistic ceasefire proposals and halting the bloodshed, remarked Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on social media platform X.
In a night operation, Russian air defenses intercepted 791 Ukrainian drones across various Russian regions, including annexed Crimea and the Black and Azov seas. This marked the second-largest drone attack since January 2025, based on Associated Press records.
Over 600 Ukrainian drones targeted the Moscow region, with 180 intercepted, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. He didn’t provide further details.
Officials confirmed no fatalities or significant destruction. However, in the Moscow region surrounding but not including the capital, three individuals sustained injuries as reported by Governor Andrei Vorobyov.
The attack set a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s major online retailer, on fire in an industrial area. Ukraine has targeted the company’s depots, alleging they support Russia’s military supply chain. Wildberries described the damage as ‘insignificant.’
Conversely, a Russian missile strike on Pechenihy, a village in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, led to the death of 10 civilians, according to Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration. Additionally, 17 people were injured. President Zelenskyy labeled it ‘a brutal attack’ that harmed 10 homes, a cafe, a post office, a store, and at least seven vehicles, per Syniehubov.
We will respond to this Russian attack, stated Zelenskyy on social media.
Moreover, Russian attacks on Ukraine’s Sumy region resulted in three fatalities and three injuries within the past day. These included drone strikes and an explosive device blast, as reported by Ukraine’s National Police.
