Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville has responded to recent comments from Oliver Larkin, a socialist candidate aiming to unseat a mainstream Democratic congressman in Florida’s primary elections. Larkin suggested over the weekend that Carville may need to give way to people with newer ideas.
Carville, known for his role in Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign success, retorted by describing Larkin as possessing the typical attributes of a Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member, particularly having a ‘motor mouth.’ He remarked that Larkin fits the profile of every DSA member.
Larkin, running in Florida’s 25th District, addressed state Republicans’ congressional redistricting map earlier this year. Carville has consistently criticized the success of far-left and socialist candidates over mainstream opponents in recent primaries, viewing them as a challenge to the Democratic Party’s ideological direction.
During a Fox News appearance on ‘Jesse Waters Primetime,’ Carville labeled these socialist members as ‘silly’ and ‘a pack of fools.’ Meanwhile, 33-year-old Larkin, who previously worked on Bernie Sanders’ 2016 campaign, remains the only DSA-endorsed candidate in a contested swing district. He challenges moderate Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz.
Moskowitz, supported by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and indirectly by pro-Israel group AIPAC, faces Larkin’s campaign backed by far-left figures such as streamer Hasan Piker. Larkin insists that democratic socialism can prevail in any district and proudly represents the DSA.
Larkin believes traditional Democratic strategists like Carville see their influence waning as new leadership emerges. In a ‘Fox News Sunday’ interview, Larkin cautioned against excluding individuals from the party, suggesting that their votes will be crucial in future elections.
