Meta Platforms Faces Trial Over Social Media Harms

Opening statements began on Tuesday in a trial involving Meta Platforms. Outside the federal courthouse in Oakland, California, advocates and grieving parents gathered. They displayed a banner with names of children and young adults who died due to social media-related harm. This harm includes deaths by suicide after cyberbullying or sextortion. Names like Giovanni, Bubba, and Englyn, among nearly 600 others, serve as a stark reminder of the issue’s magnitude.

Lennon Torres, an advocate from the Heat Initiative, spoke outside the courthouse. She stated, “Behind us, justice is going to be served.” Highlighting the trial’s importance, Torres claimed it would reveal what Meta executives have allegedly known: their products are addictive and harmful to children.

Many parents present have appeared at previous trials and congressional hearings on child safety online. They see this trial as a pivotal moment where four states’ attorneys general seek billions in damages for social media-related harm to children.

Meta has lost two major cases related to child harm this year, both under appeal. Amy Neville, whose son Alexander died from fentanyl poisoning after being deceived on Snapchat, highlighted the changing public perception against tech companies. She emphasized the need for accountability and safer product designs.

The Focus of the Lawsuit

The lawsuit targets broad claims against Meta, focusing on design decisions that allegedly put young users at risk. The states claim Meta knowingly downplayed the dangers of its platforms. Meta denies these allegations, arguing the trial will showcase its safety efforts.

The trial could significantly impact Meta’s operations and profitability. Many parents are eager for trial evidence, particularly internal Meta documents, to be publicly disclosed. John DeMay, whose son Jordan committed suicide after a sextortion incident on Instagram, highlighted the importance of revealing information to the public.

“As this information starts to unfold, the American people, the American mothers and fathers who are not seeing this daily will understand the reality of what’s happening,” DeMay said.

Some parents present were from the four states involved in the lawsuit: California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey. They thanked their states’ attorneys general for their dedication to the case. Lori Schott of Colorado shared how Attorney General Phil Weiser examined her daughter Annalee’s social media usage and personal writings after her death by suicide at 18.

Calls for Accountability

Parents like Schott addressed Meta, its CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Instagram’s head Adam Mosseri. “Profits do not erase responsibility,” Schott said, stressing that no company should be beyond the truth, law, or the well-being of children.

Parent advocates expressed optimism about the trial’s potential impact. Erin Popolo, whose daughter Emily Murillo died by suicide following cyberbullying, hoped it could spark substantial change in social media practices. “I think that we’re going to make history here,” Popolo said.
