The current situation regarding presidential corruption poses a serious threat to constitutional order. In recent history, there has not been a more blatant example. The Justice Department under President Trump is using taxpayer money to establish a $1.8 billion fund. The fund, allegedly created to compensate those affected by ‘weaponization and lawfare,’ effectively exists to reward loyalists who break the law in the president’s name.
This fund reflects three troubling tendencies of Mr. Trump’s presidency:
- Corruption through office to benefit himself, his family, and allies.
- Misuse of the Justice Department to target opponents and safeguard allies.
- An attempt to recast the events of the 2020 election and the January 6, 2021, attack on Congress.
The broader context of this fund is Mr. Trump’s project to dismantle democratic structures for personal gain. He questions election legitimacy unless victorious. He uses federal law enforcement against perceived foes and rewards law-breaking supporters. His actions aim to change election rules to maintain power.
Though his project has not fully succeeded, various American institutions continue to defend democracy. Yet, it is crucial to recognize his attempts clearly.
The fund’s creation stems from a peculiar lawsuit Mr. Trump filed against the Internal Revenue Service related to his leaked tax returns. The negotiations involved were between Mr. Trump as a citizen and as president, revealing a conflict of interest.
The case, overseen by federal Judge Kathleen Williams in Miami, exposed the lack of genuine legal opposition, as both sides had connections to Mr. Trump or his allies. Mr. Trump himself acknowledged the conflict by stating he would ‘work out a settlement with myself.’
