West Nile Virus Reports and Prevention Strategies

Cases of West Nile virus have been reported in 32 states as the mosquito-borne disease continues to infect people during the peak summer months. Recent data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights the growing concern about this illness. As of August 18, the CDC’s ArboNET surveillance system recorded 222 human cases nationwide. Out of these, 156 are neuroinvasive cases, which can severely affect the brain and nervous system.
The CDC’s map reveals widespread non-human activity, including infections in mosquitoes, birds, and other animals, indicating a broader circulation of the virus beyond regions with human cases. Health officials warn that West Nile virus activity typically peaks in late summer and early fall.
While most people infected with the virus never develop symptoms, severe cases can lead to hospitalization and even death. At least eight deaths have been reported this season, with Arizona reporting five deaths and California three.
Current Spread in the U.S.
CDC data shows Arizona as having the highest number of reported West Nile virus cases this year, with 76 cases. Texas follows with 31 cases, and California has 29. Among the 18 states without reported cases, many are located in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. Alaska and Hawaii also have no reported cases.
Prevention is Key
No vaccine is available for the public, and there is no specific antiviral treatment for West Nile virus. Therefore, prevention remains the primary defense. The CDC recommends several measures:
- Use EPA-registered insect repellents.
- Wear long-sleeved clothing when mosquitoes are active.
- Ensure window and door screens are intact to keep mosquitoes out.
- Eliminate standing water around homes to reduce mosquito breeding areas.
Standing water can accumulate in containers like flower pots, buckets, bird baths, pet dishes, and clogged gutters. Regularly emptying or refreshing water can help control mosquito populations.
Recognizing Symptoms
Most West Nile virus infections do not cause symptoms. The CDC estimates that about 80% of infected people remain asymptomatic. Around 20% develop mild illness known as West Nile fever, with symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash.
A small percentage can develop severe disease impacting the central nervous system, with symptoms including high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, tremors, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness, or paralysis. Less than 1% of infected individuals develop neuroinvasive disease, but these cases often require hospitalization and may lead to long-lasting health effects. About 10% of those with severe neurologic disease die.
Understanding Risk Factors
Anyone in areas where West Nile virus is present can become infected. The virus has been reported in every contiguous U.S. state since it was first detected in New York in 1999. However, the risk of severe illness isn’t evenly spread across all populations. Older adults, particularly those aged 65 and older, face the highest risk of serious neurologic complications. People with weakened immune systems or chronic medical conditions also face increased risks.
Geographical Susceptibility
West Nile virus can appear wherever mosquitoes and susceptible bird populations exist. Factors like geography, climate, and mosquito ecology significantly influence outbreak locations. The virus is maintained in a transmission cycle between birds and mosquitoes, primarily those in the Culex genus. Warm climates accelerate mosquito reproduction and viral replication, heightening transmission risk during summer.
Regions with abundant mosquito habitats, suitable weather, and large bird populations often see more sustained virus activity. The CDC emphasizes that a lack of reported human cases doesn’t mean an area is risk-free, as human infections are frequently underreported and surveillance varies.
Treatment Options
No specific treatment exists for West Nile virus infections. Those with mild symptoms are generally advised to rest, stay hydrated, and manage symptoms with supportive care. Severe cases may require hospitalization for intravenous fluids, respiratory support, or other treatments to manage complications.
Recovery from neuroinvasive disease can take weeks or months, with some patients experiencing lasting neurological issues. With mosquito season ongoing, health officials urge people to take precautions while the virus stays active across numerous states.
