Four candidates have emerged from Alaska’s nonpartisan primary. This race may influence the U.S. Senate balance in November.
Sen. Dan Sullivan, a Republican, and former Rep. Mary Peltola, a Democrat, are advancing. They are joined by two others in Alaska’s unique general election.
Alaska’s Election Process
Alaska employs a top-four nonpartisan primary. This is followed by ranked choice voting, often called an instant runoff election.
Voters rank candidates by preference. If their top choice is eliminated, their votes transfer to their next choice. This system is praised for empowering voters and influencing candidates who aren’t top choices initially. Critics, including Sullivan, argue that it causes confusion.
Sullivan expressed concern about voter confusion, citing the election system as problematic.
The Same-Name Incident
Confusion increased when two candidates shared the same name. Dan J. Sullivan, a logger, ran against the incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan. Dan J. Sullivan’s campaign did not clarify his political stance but focused on the shared name.
This situation led to criticisms from Republicans, suggesting it’s an attempt to confuse voters and siphon votes from the incumbent senator.
Sen. Sullivan accused the Democrats and Peltola’s campaign of attempting to trick voters.
Peltola’s Role in the Election
Peltola, who was the only Democrat to win statewide in Alaska since 1972, lost her seat in 2024 to Rep. Nicholas Begich. Her narrow loss is seen as potential leverage for Democrats in their bid to win Sullivan’s seat.
High-profile Democrats, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, support Peltola as the best chance for the party to gain the seat.
Harris endorsed Peltola as a strong candidate at a fundraiser, highlighting her potential impact.
The four candidates will compete again on November 3. Their outcomes remain crucial for shaping Alaska’s political landscape.
