The 2026 midterm elections are drawing attention as key Senate and House races are identified. On ‘America’s Newsroom,’ anchor Bill Hemmer discussed the midterm power rankings with contributor Karl Rove. Four Senate races in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, and Ohio are considered toss-ups. Additionally, there are 16 House seats in play. Rove also focused on the Michigan Democratic primary on August 4, where progressive Abdul El-Sayed faces establishment candidate Haley Stevens.
In Wyoming, significant political shifts are taking place. Chuck Gray, the Republican Secretary of State, secured the GOP nomination for Wyoming’s sole U.S. House seat. He will replace Rep. Harriet Hageman, who is now a Senate candidate. Gray, a prominent conservative aligned with Trump, defeated other notable candidates like businessman Steve Friess and Reid Rasner in a crowded primary field.
The Republican primary was prompted by Hageman’s decision to leave the House and run for Senate. She seeks to fill the seat of retiring Sen. Cynthia Lummis. Hageman came to prominence in 2022 after defeating Liz Cheney in a high-profile Republican primary. Wyoming’s political landscape is unusual this election cycle, with key races for the governorship, Senate, and House seat all occurring simultaneously for the first time in over 30 years.
The battle to succeed Hageman attracted many Republican candidates and became the costliest race in Wyoming’s primary elections. Notably, neither Trump nor Hageman endorsed a candidate, which left competitors vying for conservative support. This differs from other state primaries where Trump supported Hageman for Senate and also backed state Superintendent Megan Degenfelder for governor.
The Republican nominee is highly favored in the general election come November. Wyoming is a staunchly Republican state; Trump captured it by nearly 46 percentage points in the 2024 election. The state has elected only one Democrat to a statewide office in over three decades. Republicans hold all statewide positions and majorities in the state Legislature.
