Individuals prescribed oral glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications, such as Wegovy tablets, should not consume these with morning coffee or tea. The FDA prescribing information advises that Wegovy tablets must be taken on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of water, excluding any other liquids. After ingestion, a wait time of at least 30 minutes is recommended before eating, drinking, or taking any oral medications.
Wegovy stands as the first FDA-approved oral option for chronic weight management. It features specific guidelines because its absorption through the digestive system may be influenced by the intake of food and drinks. Dr. Michael Hall, a board-certified physician specializing in longevity and author of “Infinite Youth,” agrees with these guidelines. He emphasizes that the medication should only be consumed with water to avoid interference with absorption. Coffee, tea, juice, and similar beverages can affect how the medicine is absorbed.
For users of oral GLP-1 medications, Dr. Hall has formulated a recommended morning routine:
- Wake up
- Take the Wegovy tablet whole with up to 4 ounces of plain water (the FDA states that tablets should not be split, crushed, chewed, or dissolved)
- Wait for at least 30 minutes
- Proceed with breakfast, coffee, tea, and other oral medications
Users should delay other oral medications for 30 minutes as food, beverages, and other medicines can affect drug absorption if ingested too soon. GLP-1 medications might also slow the emptying of the stomach, impacting how other oral medications are absorbed.
Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst, corroborates the importance of taking a GLP-1 pill on an empty stomach with water. Although drinking tea throughout the day does not generally interfere with GLP-1 absorption, medical consultation is advised. Some teas, including green, black, and white teas, can support digestion, while ginger and peppermint teas may help alleviate nausea.
