Federal authorities arrested Yupeng Sun, a Chinese national residing in Massachusetts, for alleged voter fraud related to the 2024 presidential election. According to federal prosecutors, Sun impersonated another Chinese national to register and vote, subsequently reporting the victim to immigration authorities for illegal voting.
Sun, 33, from Andover, faces charges of fraudulent voter registration and voting, as stated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts. A federal criminal complaint claims Sun admitted to using the victim’s identity to register and vote during a July interview with federal investigators. “I tell you the truth, I register,” Sun allegedly stated when confronted with the victim’s voter registration details.
Details of the Allegations
An anonymous tip pointed investigators to a Massachusetts permanent resident’s alleged illegal voting in the 2024 election, including a screenshot of that individual’s voter registration status. Federal complaints revealed Sun used a photograph of an early voting ballot envelope as evidence when admitting to casting a vote in the victim’s name on October 31, 2024, at Malden City Hall. Voter records confirmed that the ballot under the victim’s name was accepted for the 2024 presidential election.
Previously, Sun rented a room from the victim’s family in Malden. Investigators allege he impersonated the victim and his wife in immigration documents, leading to the confiscation of their green cards upon returning from an international trip in June 2024. In January 2026, an immigration judge restored their legal status, corroborating their credibility and forensic evidence suggesting they did not sign the forms.
Investigative Actions
Federal investigators also allege Sun later submitted anonymous tips to Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, accusing the victim of illegal voting. Sun reportedly admitted to sending such tips during an interview, saying, “I went to post office and, uh, to report the father vote.” Sun first entered the U.S. on a B-2 tourist visa in September 2020, which expired in March 2021. He received deferred action status through a U-Visa application filed in February 2022.
Legal Proceedings
The Massachusetts Secretary of State’s office did not provide comments immediately. Each count of voter fraud carries significant penalties, including up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Additionally, Sun might face deportation after serving any sentence.
U.S. Attorney Leah Foley and Jeff Grimming, the acting special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New England, disclosed the charges. The investigation involved assistance from the Lexington and Andover police departments. While charges are applied, Sun remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
