President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped to a record low during his second term. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that only 33% approve of his performance, marking a decline from 35% the previous week. The poll included 1,166 respondents, with 64% expressing disapproval of his job in the White House.
In December 2017, Trump also reached a 33% approval rating, which was the lowest point during his first term. The ongoing war in Iran continues to impact his approval ratings. A significant 80% of those surveyed believe the conflict will persist for an extended period.
The war commenced in February with the aim of dismantling Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz have further complicated the situation. With one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through this key passage, its closure has caused a noticeable increase in fuel prices.
“Remember that when you have to pay a little bit more, $4, it’s OK,” said Trump at a rally, defending the surge in fuel prices.
Since the conflict began, national average gas prices have increased from under $3 to over $4 per gallon, as reported by the American Automobile Association (AAA). Inflation has also risen, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reporting a year-over-year increase from 2.4% to 3.4%.
The White House notes several achievements such as middle-class tax cuts, reduced prescription drug costs, and low crime rates. Olivia Wales, a spokesperson, responded to poll questions highlighting these successes.
Despite signs of economic strain, gas prices at places like a Mobil station in Los Angeles show a decline following a U.S.-Iran agreement. However, analysts warn that relief might be temporary due to refinery constraints and supply issues.
The war in Iran, supported by only 35% of Americans, becomes a focal point for Democrats aiming to reclaim seats in Congress. Affordability issues remain at the forefront of discussions.
