Bill Maher recently revealed that Ben Affleck has consistently declined invitations to return to HBO’s ‘Real Time’ since their heated exchange in 2014. During the discussion, Affleck accused Maher and Sam Harris of making ‘gross’ and ‘racist’ comments about Islam. Despite Maher’s repeated invitations, Affleck has not revisited the show, showing a standstill in resolving their disagreement.
Maher expressed on his ‘Club Random’ podcast his hope for a private conversation with Affleck to find common ground. He openly acknowledged the likelihood of continued disagreement but remained hopeful for a resolution through dialogue.
Affleck’s representative has not responded regarding Maher’s account or a potential return to the show. His last appearance was in October 2014. Affleck later explained that his reaction stemmed from his opposition to racial or religious stereotypes, highlighting a fundamental liberal belief against such generalizations.
In the original discussion, Affleck countered sweeping claims about Muslims when Harris described criticism of Islamic doctrine as sometimes mistaken for bigotry. Affleck argued against stereotypes, emphasizing the diverse and peaceful nature of over a billion Muslims worldwide.
At one point, Maher compared Islamic reactions to blasphemy and dissent to mafia-like behavior. Affleck characterized these comments as gross and racist. Harris defended his stance, insisting he differentiated among various Muslim groups during the debate.
Sam Harris later shared that he and Affleck reconciled privately, contrasting Maher’s continued lack of personal conversation with the actor. Maher commented that the episode’s emotional nature, involving a movie star, attracted more attention than its content warranted.
