Prince Harry and Meghan Markle intend to return to the United Kingdom with their two children later this month, according to reports. The couple, who stepped away from royal duties six years ago and moved to California, are planning to settle in a private residence outside London.
The BBC reports that their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, will begin attending a British school this September. King Charles III was informed of the move and reportedly looks forward to spending more time privately with the Sussex family. Prince William and Kate Middleton have also been informed.
The relocation will not affect Harry and Meghan’s royal status, as they do not plan to resume official duties. They aim to maintain their status as private individuals.
The couple’s last joint visit to the UK was in September 2022 for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. They previously relocated from royal duties in 2020 and have lived in Montecito, California, since then. Their relationship with the royal family has been tense following public discussions about their grievances through interviews and media, including Harry’s memoir “Spare.”
Security concerns have been a significant issue for the Duke of Sussex. He lost a legal case in 2025 concerning police protection while in the UK. Harry has cited safety concerns as a reason he has been cautious about visiting with Meghan and the children.
Despite moving back, reconciliation with the royal family does not imply taking up royal duties again. Experts like Kinsey Schofield mention the possibility of Harry supporting his family privately without formal roles in the monarchy.
